Brightshores Health System operates six hospitals in the Grey Bruce region with its Level 2 regional referral hospital located in the City of Owen Sound. A full range of specialty services are offered through the Departments of Anesthesia, Diagnostic Imaging, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Oncology, Hospitalist Medicine, Internal Medicine, Palliative Care, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery (ENT, General Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Urology).

With annual ER volumes of over 90,000 visits across Brightshores six hospitals, 24-hour labs, excellent specialty back-up, and comprehensive diagnostic imaging (CT, MRI, PACS capability), our modern facilities are very well equipped. Thriving rural hospitals are located in the communities of Lion’s Head, Markdale, Meaford, Southampton and Wiarton, servicing a range of ambulatory, in-patient and emergency needs.

LOCUM OPPORTUNITY:

Short-term and long-term locums available. Preference will be given to locums available for consecutive weeks and/or months during the period of April 2025 to March 2026; some weekend On-Call coverage options also available (typical weekend coverage 0800 Friday to 0800 Monday).

Description
Pediatricians at Brightshores-Owen Sound Hospital provides on-call support, inpatient service for pediatric and neonatal patients, and hospital-based outpatient consultations and follow-up to a wide catchment area of over 170,000 residents and more than 2 million short-stay visitors each year. The Owen Sound Hospital has a Level 2b Intensive Care Nursery that routinely admits neonates 32+ weeks, with the ability to provide non-invasive ventilation, TPN and emergency care as needed. We are well supported by our colleagues and units in tertiary care at the Children’s Hospital – London Health Sciences Centre. We have 5 dedicated pediatric ward beds, with privileges to admit pediatric patients to the ICU. We also deliver well-newborn care to over 800 babies born in Owen Sound per year. Additionally, there are 2-pediatric mental health beds that are managed by a full-time Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist. We are also a teaching program affiliated with both Western and McMaster Universities with opportunity to be involved in teaching pediatric medicine for medical residents.

Service Delivery:

The Department of Pediatrics schedules Pediatricians across three service areas, as outlined below.

(1)     24 HR ON-CALL: On-Call rotation 0800 to 0800 daily. Consultations at the Owen Sound ED and virtual (phone/other) consultations with outlying hospitals across Grey Bruce (10 rural hospitals in the region); pediatric admissions from the ER; repatriations from tertiary care; attendance at high risk deliveries; admissions to Level 2B NICU; Pediatric Code Blue and Code Pink coverage. Call room available, but home-call generally (expected time from urgent call to arrival in hospital – 15 minutes)

(2)     PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIST: MRP coverage for 6 pediatric beds, 8 Level 2B NICU beds and healthy newborns (~6-10 per week). Schedule: 0800 to 1700 Monday to Friday and/or combined with Weekend On-Call.

 

(3)     PEDIATRIC CLINIC: Outpatient pediatric consultations (mainly) and follow-up (limited); clinic located on site at Brightshores Owen Sound Hospital



Requirements

Qualifications

   Interested candidates will ideally hold applicable FRCPC designation and an independent license to practice in Ontario. 

   Up-to-date PALS and NRP are strongly encouraged.




Benefits

 Compensation Model:

A contracted locum arrangement via the Pediatric Regional Alternate Funding Plan (AFP) is available for base compensation. Pediatricians also bill OHIP for a percentage of shadow billing (51.2%) for direct patient encounters, and also receive HOCC for on-call days. Typical monthly coverage includes 6-7 call shifts per month, 8-10 clinic days per month, and 1 in 5 weeks as Pediatric Hospitalist.

Operational Supports:

Dragon dictation is available to all specialists and our hospital EMR is “Cerner/Oracle”. The office EMR is PS Suites/Telus. Administrative support available (on site Monday to Wednesday, other days negotiable if required).

Travel and Accommodation:
Brightshores is pleased to offer free short-term accommodations in our shared locum condo, which has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, with shared kitchen/living space; parking on-site also available. Should private accommodations be required, a shared cost structure would be developed between the Physician and Medical Affairs. Return trip mileage is also available to support your travel to/from the area.
